The THOMSEA Company was established with the aim of making and selling anti-pollution trawl nets that have been developed after initial trials by fishermen during the oil spills from the ERIKA and the PRESTIGE.
After three years, the THOMSEA net was finally ready and, for the first time, it was used in a real situation - the oil spill from the PRESTIGE.
Its performance was so impressive (the equivalent of 2,500 tons of heavy oil collected before it could reach the Atlantic coast), that after the area was checked by CEPPOL and CEDRE (water pollution research centres), the MARINE NATIONALE FRANCAISE (French Navy) decided to use the THOMSEA net to drag any crude oil that could not be pumped, emulsified or dispersed, along with debris floating on the surface, from the open sea towards the coast (required draught of less than one metre).
THOMSEA provides training to its clients on how to exploit the net as well as the necessary adjustments to make when using fishing boats, oyster boats or any other type of vessel that could be asked to intervene in the next pollution disaster along the coast.
